Bournemouth 1-2 Ipswich Town: McKenna's men give themselves hope

23h39 CEST

02/04/2025

Ipswich Town saw off a faltering Bournemouth 2-1 to claim their first Premier League win of 2025 and offer themselves a glimmer of hope in their bid to stay up.

Nathan Broadhead’s first Premier League goal put the visitors ahead in the 34th minute of Wednesday's clash at the Vitality Stadium, just moments after Bournemouth had gone close at the other end, with Antoine Semenyo and Alex Scott forcing Alex Palmer into making two crucial saves.

Liam Delap doubled Ipswich's lead on the hour, playing a one-two with Conor Townsend before lashing a powerful first-time shot into the net.

Bournemouth thought they had a penalty when Semenyo was brought down by Axel Tuanzebe, but the on-field decision was overturned following a VAR review, with the contact having been outside the area.

Evanilson initiated hopes of a comeback when he pounced on a rebound from Lewis Cook’s effort in the 67th minute, but Ipswich held firm to claim just their fourth league win of the season.

Tenth-place Bournemouth have now lost four of their last five league games, in a further blow to their hopes of qualifying for Europe, while 18th-place Ipswich are now nine points from safety ahead of a crunch clash with Wolves.

Data debrief: Delap leads from the front

Delap has now netted 11 league goals this season. Only Marcus Stewart has scored more for the Tractor Boys in a single Premier League campaign (19 in 2000-01), and Delap could well break that record come the end of the season.

Indeed, the young striker has been Ipswich's main attacking force, accounting for 36.7% of their league goals this season (11 of 30). Only Alexander Isak (41%), Mohamed Salah (39%), and Erling Haaland (36.8%) have contributed a higher share for their respective teams.

Ipswich were clinical rather than dominant, registering just two shots on target from 10 attempts, but both of those went in, and Kieran McKenna's team finished with an expected goals value of 1.18. Bournemouth, in comparison, created plenty of chances — firing 24 shots, seven on target, with an xG of 1.95 — but lacked the cutting edge required to snap their poor run of form.

The victory marks Ipswich’s first win over Bournemouth in any competition since a 3-0 EFL Cup triumph in September 1996, ending a five-game winless run against the Cherries.
